Lewisville Lake is the big, busy one — the lake a lot of North Texas families default to for a summer weekend because it’s close, it’s huge, and there’s room on the water for everybody. From our Roanoke base it’s roughly a 25- to 30-minute drive east, which makes it one of the shortest tows to real camping we’ve got.
Where to camp on the lake
Two solid options for an RV. Lewisville Lake Park Campground is city-run with water-and-electric sites and a dump station, right on the water. Just up the shoreline, Hickory Creek Park is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campground you can reserve through Recreation.gov. Between them you’ve got enough sites that even a peak summer weekend usually has something — but “usually” is doing work there, so book ahead in June and July.
Plan around the crowd, not against it
Here’s my honest take: Lewisville is fantastic if you’re coming for the water — boats, swimming, a big social weekend — and less ideal if you’re chasing quiet. For a first-timer who wants an easy, close, on-the-water trip with the least driving from Roanoke, it’s a great pick. For a get-away-from-it-all weekend, I’d point you north to a state park instead. Match the lake to the weekend you actually want.
