Every September, Historic Main Street in Grapevine closes to cars and turns into GrapeFest — billed as the largest wine festival in the Southwest, with tasting tents, a carnival, and a few hundred thousand people over one long weekend. It’s about a 20-minute drive southeast of our Roanoke base down SH-114, which makes it one of the easiest big events around here to do out of an RV.
The trick with a festival this size is the same one locals already know: don’t fight the Main Street parking. Base yourself on the water instead.
Camp on Grapevine Lake, shuttle to the wine
The Vineyards Campground & Cabins sits right on Grapevine Lake with full-hookup, lakefront RV sites — close enough to get into downtown Grapevine without a hotel, far enough to actually sleep. You spend the day on Main Street and come back to a quiet site on the water instead of a parking garage and a room across the metroplex. (One heads-up: the Corps campground at Murrell Park on the same lake is tent-only, so for an RV, The Vineyards is the one you want.)
The right rig for a festival weekend
September still runs warm here, so air conditioning on shore power matters. For two couples or a small group, a travel trailer with a decent kitchen and outdoor seating is the move — somewhere to cook breakfast, cool off in the afternoon, and sit outside by the lake at night. Don’t want to tow into festival traffic? We deliver the rig to The Vineyards and set it up so it’s cooled down and ready when you arrive, then pick it up when the weekend’s over.
